This week, one of Canada’s premier operators of land-based casinos, Great Canadian Entertainment, unveiled the recipients of its 2024 PROUD Scholarship. The announcement comes at the end of the summer when students will return to school. However, for some families, this means hefty tuition fees and plenty of other school-related expenses for post-secondary students.
Great Canadian Entertainment’s program awards CA$1,500 scholarships to ten post-secondary students who have made an impact in their community via volunteering. Recipients are either dependents of one of the over 7,000 members of the company across the country or employees who are studying while working at one of the operator’s 25 locations.
Announcing This Year’s Recipients
Chuck Keeling, the gaming leader’s Executive Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement, Community and Social Responsibility said the company is pleased to award these scholarship cheques to recipients in time for the new semester. He also noted that the corporation is hopeful that the money will alleviate the financial stress that can come with post-secondary education.
Mr. Keeling remarked it was satisfying to go through the stories from applications and how much time and effort team members and their families committed to supporting their community. He shared that there are boards of directors for local charities that read to children and volunteer at youth shelters and others who volunteer at local food banks, homeless shelters, and social service agencies.
In its press release, the corporation provided a list of all recipients of the scholarship for 2024. This includes Elnaz Araghizadeh from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Antonino Ferlisi from Toronto, Ontario, Happy Gill from Mississauga, Ontario, Dyson Glavas from New Westminster, British Columbia, Olivia Han from Barrie, Ontario, and Hayden MacNeil from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Then there is also Jennifer Marlowe from Arthur, Ontario, Nikhila Mopury from Victoria, B.C., Patrick Pintor from Toronto, Ontario, and last but not least Adam Przyjemski from Brantford, Ontario. More information about the company’s impact and the support programs via its Great Canadian PROUND initiative, can be found on its official website.
Canada’s Largest Casino Floor is Now Open
In June 2023, Great Canadian Entertainment marked an important achievement as its Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto officially launched to the public. The gaming resort is the largest in the country 4,800 slot machines, 145 live table games, VIP rooms and sports betting terminals are available to patrons. It cost the company CA$1 billion to make it a reality.
Then in August, the company expanded operations at the resort, by opening The Hotel, which is just minutes away from Toronto Pearson International Airport. It comes with 400 first-class rooms almost half of them having views of the nearby Woodbine Racetrack. The property is also set to open a premium poker room with 30 tables on a completely private floor in the summer.
