The ALC is owned by the four Atlantic provinces, and the state-run agency is the parent company of Red Shores Racetrack & Casino. The latter provides more than 200 jobs for the province of Prince Edward Island. Red Shores has two locations in the province, the Charlottetown and Summerside, which both have been a part of the Crown corporation’s activities.

Record-Setting Purse

Michael MacKinnon, Vice-President of Gaming for the Crown agency, said that the ALC has been involved with the Gold Cup & Saucer final for years now. But with the new partnership, made the Crown more involved and more excited about it than ever before. He shared that the agency is delighted to be further increasing its contribution to one of North America’s most prestigious harness racing events.

The Gold Cup & Saucer is a local tradition for the province that dates back to 1960 and it is the largest harness racing event in the Atlantic region of Canada. The partnership will now increase exposure for the prestigious event and in addition to that, it will have increased purses. For this year’s edition, it will have a record-breaking CA$100,000.

David MacKenzie, general manager of Red Shores Racetrack & Casino claimed that the competition attracts the best horses and drivers from all across North America as well as many viewers. He added that the increased purse will add even more excitement to the race, and now the company is looking forward to the event in August, so it can welcome Islanders and visitors to celebrate the occasion.

With the boosted purses, the Gold Cup & Saucer will become only the second innovational tournament in Canada that will reach such amount of purse level in 2022. The event is an annual highlight of Prince Edward Island’s Old Home week and tourist season, as it brings approximately 20,000 people to the Red Shores Racetrack & Casino, as well as others who watch it from their homes.
