Based on new lottery research the Province of Alberta is the second luckiest region in Canada, in terms of lottery winnings. Recently, online gambling expert Datslots issued a study ranking the 10 regions of the country based on lottery windfalls in the last 12 months. It was discovered that Nunavut is the one with the most luck, followed by Alberta and Manitoba.
The recent study by Datslots applied to three national draws – Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49, and Daily Grand, which are probably the most popular lottery offerings across the country. It was based on the recorded winnings of CA$10,000 or more in the last 12 months, and prizes were combined and divided per 1,000 residents to reveal the luckiest region.
Findings from the Study
А spokesperson for the analyst firm noted that interestingly enough, Canada’s three most populous regions are not in the three luckiest areas for lottery players. Meanwhile, two of the smallest regions also performed poorly in the research, with mid-size provinces such as Alberta and Manitoba scoring some of the best luck among others.
Nunavut which turned out to be the luckiest region and has a population of 40,586 had an average winnings of CA$172,473 per 1,000 residents. The region claimed the top spot after one of its locals seized a Daily Grand jackpot of CA$7 million in October 2022. Alberta in second has a population of 4,601,314 and had an average winnings of CA$310,982,575 in the last 12 months.
Over the last 12 months, Alberta recorded a total of over CA$310 million in lottery winnings, with a jackpot in Lotto Max worth CA$70,000,000 taken home by a Calgary resident in October 2022. The windfall went to business owner Mitchel Dyck who is a regular lottery player, and his winning is the largest lottery one recorded in the province.
Manitoba with a population of 1,420,228 was in third with average winnings of CA$53,959 per 1,000 locals. In the last 12 months, the largest jackpot worth CA$60 million in Lotto Max was won by a Winnipeg resident. The Atlantic Province was in fourth place with an average winning of CA$45,688 per 1,000 residents, with the largest jackpot being CA$64 million from Lotto 6/49.
Meanwhile, Ontario which had the largest winnings in the past year of CA$646,485,815 and a population of 15,262,660 was in fifth with an average score of CA$42,357 per 10,000 people. Two Ontarians each claimed a jackpot prize of CA$60 million in November 2022. British Columbia and its population were in sixth with average winnings per 1,000 of CA$38,547.
The Rest of the Rankings
Quebec with 8,751,352 and Yukon with 43,964 people were in seventh and eighth place with average windfalls of CA$24,276 and CA$22,746, respectively. Saskatchewan came in ninth with an average score of CA$17,360 per 1,000 people. Meanwhile, the Northwest Territories were the unluckiest region with an average lottery winning of CA$11,438 per 1,000 individuals.
