The construction of the new casino in Peterborough, which would replace the Slots Parlour at Kawartha Downs at the end of this summer, is nearly completed. Officially named Shorelines Casino Peterborough, the brand new facility should be operational in late August or September and this week, it will hold a job fair to fill up to 150 positions.
As previously announced, around 150 employees will be transferred from Kawartha Downs to the new gambling facility on Crawford Drive at The Parkway. It will be considerably larger than the existing Slots Parlor, so its managing team has decided to start looking for staff. The 50,000-square-foot building will include a casino with 500 slots and 22 gaming tables, two restaurants, and a 100-room hotel. In a press release, Bryan Buchanan, General Manager of Shorelines Slots at Kawartha Downs, said that the company would organize a job fair on Thursday, May 24, and casino managers would look to hire up to 150 additional employees.
The job fair will be held at the Fleming CREW Employment Centre. According to the casino, there will be both full-time and part-time jobs in the gaming area and in the restaurants. The available positions include card dealers and table game supervisors, as well as bartenders, servers, cooks, sous chef, and many more. The company will provide paid training, Buchanan says, and the gaming positions do not require any previous experience in gaming. Along with the casino and two restaurants, the project also includes a hotel adjacent to the main building. So, hospitality workers will also be needed at a later stage.
Shorelines Casino Peterborough is managed and operated by the Ontario Gaming East LP, a partnership between Great Canadian Gaming Corporation and Brookfield Business Partners. The consortium was selected by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation in January as a service provider of its East Gaming Bundle. Since then, it operates the Shorelines Slots at Kawartha Downs, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, and Shorelines Casino Belleville. Currently under construction, the new facility in Peterborough is expected to open in late summer.
New Hotel to Open in May 2019
The planned hotel adjacent to Shorelines Casino Peterborough will have 100 rooms, a fitness centre, and an indoor saltwater pool. The Hampton Inn and Suites by Hilton, as its name would be, is currently under construction at 1400 Crawford Drive in Peterborough. In addition, a 500-seat concert theatre is set to be added later. The hotel is being built by development firm Roshan Holdings.
On Thursday, May 3, a groundbreaking ceremony for the hotel was held on the site. Hotel officials, city councillors, and Mayor Daryl Bennett took part in the event. The hotel, which is expected to open in May 2019, would address the “shortage of accommodation” in the city, Mayor Daryl Bennett told reporters. Roshan Holdings director of development Jordan Struk also spoke at the ceremony, pointing out that the crews first need to build and service the site before the actual construction of the building can begin. This is expected to happen this week, while there is still no information about the planned events and concert hall.
